In Rockford, Illinois, the city council and township have decided to give more money to a helpful program that's been around for 30 years.

This program is all about helping people who have to move out of their homes because of a fire or natural disaster. Over the years, it's provided money for the security deposit and the first month's rent when people need to find a new place to live.

Recently, they decided to add $10,000 to the money they already had, making a total of $25,000 available for people who need it. This was officially agreed upon on Monday night.

Owen Carter, who leads the city's Health and Human Services Department, said that this program has really made a difference. He pointed out that almost all the people who've been helped are still living in the homes they moved to.

"This help is crucial," Carter said. "It eases a big worry for families during a tough time. They don't have to stress about coming up with the money for a security deposit and first month's rent."

The need for more money comes as rent prices go up and more households are affected by fires. "Rental costs today are much higher than before. We need more money to help more families in need," Carter explained.

Mike Schnaper, who investigates arson cases for the Rockford Fire Department, also mentioned there's been an increase in fires.

So far, they've dealt with 73 fires. "It's a big shock for those affected," he said. "A bit of help can make a huge difference to them."

Carter hopes that with more funds, they can help even more families than before. "Even if we don't know them personally, they are important to someone. Helping to ease their worry and fear is truly valuable," he said.

This funding will be available until March of 2026.
